According to Diodorus Siculus (Book 5, 69), Poseidon was originally a mortal man in Crete, known for taming horses and thus called "hippios" (horseman). Later, his father (Cronus) assigned him maritime duties, which he performed exceptionally well. After his death, he was deified and recognized as the god of the sea.
